An Action Plan for YOU:
Center Contact Awareness Drill
The best way to become familiar with “how” to become aware of center contact is during a simple practice session of 30 golf balls. You will be making a small swing with a wedge, one that would carry the ball no more than 50 yards.
Apply face tape to the clubface, mark the “sweet spot” with a little dot using a sharpie pen, then hit 7 balls intent on getting ball contact as close to the spot as you can. Replace the tape and repeat for two more sets of 7 shots.
For the next 9 shots you will alternate contact location as follows: 3 shots intentionally on the heel side of center, 3 shots intentionally on the toe side of center and the final 3 shots on the CENTER of the face.
If you do not have face tape, you can simply use two different color sharpies. For example, mark the sweet spot on your clubface with a black dot. Then mark each golf ball with a small red dot. Set the dot on the ball so it will be struck by the clubface. If the ink is fresh, the red dot will transfer to the clubface upon impact and give you clear feedback relative to where you struck the ball in relation to the black dot on the sweet spot.
This simple drill will take only about 20 minutes to complete. Upon its completion you will have a clear understanding of what it means to focus your attention on center contact. Your intent on either heel, toe, or center will reveal to you that you have a choice when it comes to planning the quality of impact.

While this drill is simplistic in nature, the experience of purposely controlling the impact location is powerful.
