While perusing Vince Lombardi Jr.’s book about his father (What It Takes To Be #1), I came across Chapter 5, titled “Developing Winning Habits.”
In this chapter, Lombardi shares his father’s nine rules:
1. Own your habits – Search out and identify your beliefs and the habits that grow out of them.
2. Use your courage – When necessary, pick flight, but otherwise be brave and fight!
3. Embrace your passion – Jump into your passion with both feet, and bring others along with you.
4. Be prepared to sacrifice – Sacrifice and self-denial lie behind every success.
5. Demand total commitment – Demand it first from yourself and then from others around you.
6. Weed out the uncommitted – The organization that wins is populated by winners.
7. Work at it – Don’t buy the myth of the overnight success; invest in your talent.
8. Be disciplined on and off the field – Discipline takes different forms, but it always pertains.
9. Be mentally tough – Use your toughness to beat setbacks; use your toughness to seek out new challenges.
These nine habits are equally applicable to golf as they are to football and life in general. If you want to get your game in shape, take advice from Lombardi’s book and integrate these concepts into your practice and play regimens.
